Because of the handmade process and the natural characteristics of shell and rattan, slight variations in colour, inlay pattern, and shading are part of what makes every piece one of a kind. Story

The Soleil is a set of three round rattan trays, each inlaid with a hand-placed mother of pearl mosaic. Named after the sun — for the way the shell catches and holds light differently from every angle.

Made in Kim Son village, Ninh Bình province, North Vietnam, by artisans trained in the son mai lacquerware tradition. The process: rattan is woven into form, lacquer is applied in layers, shell fragments are placed individually by hand — each piece cut to size, positioned, and pressed into wet lacquer. The surface is then sanded back until the shell is flush with the lacquer. 12 hours of continuous work per tray.

Three graduated sizes. For morning coffee, evening drinks, or the things that deserve a surface worth looking at.

Details

A set of three round rattan trays, each inlaid by hand with mother of pearl in a radiating sunburst pattern — rings of yellow, cream, and dark blue shell fanning out from the centre. Named for the sun: round in shape, patterned like its rays, and holding light the same way the shell does. The rattan base is woven first, then shell fragments are cut and placed one by one into the surface, arranged into the sunburst by hand. No two trays reflect light in quite the same way — the angle and colour of each fragment shifts slightly depending on how the shell itself was cut. Wooden loop handles on either side make the trays easy to lift and carry. Three graduated sizes, designed to nest or spread across a table.

Care Instructions

Mother of pearl lacquerware asks little, and gives back a great deal.

Wipe clean with a soft, dry cloth after use.
Avoid prolonged contact with moisture or liquids — particularly acidic substances like lemon juice or vinegar.
Do not place in a dishwasher or submerge in water.
Keep away from direct, sustained heat sources such as stovetops or open flames.
The surface will develop a subtle patina with use — this is natural and desirable, not a defect.
Not intended for direct food contact. Use with plates, bowls, or wrapped items rather than placing food directly on the tray surface.

The mother of pearl inlay is set into multiple layers of lacquer and sanded flush. It will not lift or peel under normal use.

Handcrafted Artistry

The rattan tray is woven first. Lacquer is applied in multiple layers, each one left to cure before the next is applied. Shell fragments are then cut by hand to size and set individually into the wet lacquer, each fragment positioned for maximum light reflection. Additional coats of lacquer are applied over the inlay, then the surface is sanded back, layer by layer, until the shell sits flush. The final surface is polished by hand.

Wooden loop handles are fitted to either side once the tray is complete.

The tray base is woven from natural rattan — a hard, structural vine, split and shaped by hand. The inlay is genuine mother of pearl: ocean shell cut into fragments and set by hand into the sunburst pattern, in yellow, cream, and dark blue tones. Loop handles are finished in wood.
