Handwoven in Ninh Bình, along Vietnam's Red River Delta, this set of three open-top seagrass baskets is shaped by hand in a diamond weave. Named for the reed — bending, crossing, and growing close at the water's edge, the same pattern the diamond weave traces by hand.

Please Note
Each basket is individually handwoven from natural seagrass by skilled artisans. Because of the handmade process and the unique characteristics of natural fibres, slight variations in colour, weave, and shape are part of what makes every piece one of a kind. The product you receive may differ from the photographs.

Story

The Reed is a set of three open-top seagrass baskets in a distinctive diamond weave, each with braided loop handles. Named for the reed — a plant that bends and crosses at the water's edge, the same pattern the diamond weave traces by hand.

Made in Ninh Bình, along Vietnam's Red River Delta, where seagrass weaving communities have refined the diamond pattern across generations. Each diamond is formed by offsetting the weaving passes in a precise sequence — more demanding than a standard weave, and visibly so.

Three graduated sizes. Stack them, nest them, or place them across a room. The set is designed to live together just as well as apart.

Care Instructions

A seagrass basket is meant to be lived with, not admired from a distance.

They're built to hold what a day accumulates — laundry, toys, throws — and to look better for it. With regular use, the natural tone deepens into a soft patina, the quiet mark of a piece well-loved.

  • Wipe clean with a dry or barely damp cloth. Do not saturate with water.
  • Keep away from prolonged moisture or direct rain.
  • Avoid sustained direct sunlight for extended periods — this may fade the natural colour over time.
  • If a basket loses its shape, lightly dampen the exterior and reshape by hand. Leave to dry in position.

Cared for this way, a Palme & House piece is built to stay in your home for years to come.

01 / The Craft

Handcrafted Artistry

Handcrafted Artistry

The diamond weave that defines The Reed is more technically demanding than a standard basket weave. Each diamond is formed by offsetting the weaving passes in a precise, repeating sequence — a pattern the weavers carry in their hands, not on paper.

The braided loop handles are woven separately, then attached to the rim once the basket body is complete — a final, deliberate step rather than an afterthought.

02 / The Materials

Organic Materials

Organic Materials

Seagrass harvested from the coastal regions of North Vietnam — dried naturally and woven without chemical treatment. The diamond pattern is formed entirely through the weaving technique, not through dye or surface treatment.

The natural golden-straw colour will deepen slightly with use — a quality of the material, not a defect.

The Reed in Your Home

Three baskets named after the reed. Stack them or spread them.

  • The Large Reed — beside the sofa for throws, beside a fireplace for firewood, or as a floor planter cover for a large indoor tree.
  • The Medium Reed — a plant pot holder for a mid-sized plant, a toy organiser in a living room corner, or a bathroom linen basket.
  • The Small Reed — fruit on a kitchen counter or a catch-all on a bedside table.
