A handwoven rattan basket lined in cotton, made in Chương Mỹ, Hanoi, North Vietnam — the name is simply the French word for wicker: no metaphor, just simplicity and authenticity, genuine as the material itself.

Please Note
Each basket is individually handwoven from natural seagrass by skilled artisans. Because of the handmade process and the unique characteristics of natural fibres, slight variations in colour, weave, and shape are part of what makes every piece one of a kind. Story

The Osier is a handwoven rattan basket, made in Chương Mỹ, one of Vietnam's weaving districts, where generations of artisans have passed the same techniques from hand to hand.

It's named, in French, for the wicker it's made of — a name as simple and honest as the material it carries, refined and built to last.

Rattan begins as a vine, harvested and split into strips by hand, then woven into a tight, rigid form — heavier and more structurally demanding than seagrass or water hyacinth. It holds its shape, and does not soften with use.

Details
A handwoven rattan basket lined in cotton, made in Chương Mỹ, Hanoi, North Vietnam — named in French for wicker: no metaphor, just simplicity and authenticity, genuine as the material itself. Rattan is a harder, more structurally demanding material than seagrass or water hyacinth — a vine rather than a grass, woven from thinner strips split from its core. The result is a basket with rigidity: it holds its shape in a way a softer fibre basket doesn't, making it sturdy enough for everyday laundry. The cotton lining is removable, tied in rather than sewn — lift it out to use as a laundry bag on its own, wash it separately, or take it out entirely if you'd rather use the basket bare.

Care Instructions

A rattan basket is meant to be lived with, not admired from a distance.

They're built to hold what a day accumulates — laundry, toys, throws — and to look better for it. With regular use, the natural tone deepens into a soft patina, the quiet mark of a piece well-loved.

  • Wipe clean with a dry or barely damp cloth. Do not saturate with water.
  • The cotton lining is removable — lift it out to wash separately, or use it on its own as a laundry bag.
  • Keep away from prolonged moisture or direct rain.
  • Avoid extended direct sunlight — this can fade the natural color over time.

Cared for this way, a Palme & House piece is built to stay in your home for years to come.

Handcrafted Artistry

Handcrafted Artistry

Rattan is a harder and more structurally demanding material than seagrass or water hyacinth. The weaving is done with thinner strips of rattan split from the core, which produces a tighter, denser weave than fibre basket techniques.

The cotton lining is cut to size, set inside the basket, and folded over the rim before being tied in place — removable, so it can be lifted out to wash separately or used on its own as a laundry bag.

02 / The Materials

Organic Materials

Organic Materials

Rattan harvested from the forests of North Vietnam. Unlike seagrass and water hyacinth, rattan is a vine — woody and rigid, with a smooth natural surface. It produces a basket that is structurally stronger and heavier than natural fibre alternatives.

The cotton interior lining is 100% cotton.

The Osier in Your Home

A wicker basket in the truest sense. Sturdy, refined, built to outlast its purpose.

  • The Laundry Companion — sturdy enough for everyday laundry, holding its shape and weight in a way a softer basket can't. Lift out the cotton lining to use as a laundry bag on its own.
  • The Wicker Corner (Entryway) — umbrellas, walking sticks, the things that live beside the front door.
  • The Pantry Basket — dry goods, vegetables, or the beautiful organisation of a kitchen that deserves better than plastic.
  • The Office Anchor — files, books, chargers. The rattan weave is stiff enough to hold heavy contents without sagging.
