Story

The Nuit is a handwoven bamboo basket in matte black, finished with a fitted lid and a leather pull handle. Named after the French word for night — not for darkness, but for that particular quality of stillness a matte black object brings to a room.

Made in North Vietnam, where bamboo weaving is a generational craft practised in village workshops across the Red River Delta. The black tone comes from a traditional smoke-dyeing or lacquering technique applied to the bamboo before weaving — giving the basket its characteristic depth and uniformity of colour.

Sold as a set of two. A striking counterpoint to the natural tones of The Mai and The Lune. Use them together or separate them across rooms.

They're built to hold what a day accumulates — laundry, toys, throws — and to look better for it. With regular use, the natural tone deepens into a soft patina, the quiet mark of a piece well-loved.

  • Wipe clean with a dry or barely damp cloth. Do not saturate with water.
  • Keep away from prolonged moisture or direct rain.
  • Avoid sustained direct sunlight for extended periods — this may fade the natural colour over time.
  • If the basket loses its shape, lightly dampen the exterior and reshape by hand. Leave to dry in position.

Handcrafted Artistry

Bamboo weaving requires a different hand than seagrass or water hyacinth — the material is harder and less forgiving, which means the weave is tighter and more precise. The black colour is applied to the bamboo slats before weaving, so the colour is consistent through the full depth of the weave, not just on the surface.

The lid is woven separately and fitted by hand. The leather pull handle is stitched to the lid after weaving using a traditional cross-stitch.

Bamboo is one of the most structurally strong natural materials in the Vietnamese craft tradition. The matte black tone of The Nuit comes from a traditional dyeing process applied to the bamboo before weaving — the colour runs through the full depth of the material, not just the surface. It will not chip or flake.

The leather pull handle is genuine chestnut leather — thick, supple, and designed to develop a patina with use.
