Handwoven in Chương Mỹ, this set of three nesting oval rattan trays is inlaid by hand with mother of pearl in a radiating leaf pattern — named Nacre, the French word for the shell itself, for the way each fragment shifts between white and shadow depending on the light.

Please Note
Each tray is individually handcrafted with hand-placed mother of pearl inlay by skilled artisans. Because of the handmade process and the natural characteristics of shell and rattan, slight variations in colour, inlay pattern, and shading are part of what makes every piece one of a kind. The product you receive may differ from the photographs.

Story

The Nacre is a set of three nesting oval rattan trays, handcrafted in Chương Mỹ, Hanoi — a district where rattan weaving and mother-of-pearl inlay have been worked side by side for generations, passed from parent to child in household workshops rather than factories.

The two crafts meet in every tray: one artisan shapes the rattan body by hand, weaving the rim so it gathers into its own grip; another sets each shell fragment into place, working the same radiating pattern their family has made for years. It's slow work, done at the pace the material asks for, not the machine.

She's named Nacre — the French word for the shell itself — for the way each fragment shifts between white and shadow depending on the light.

Details
A set of three nesting oval rattan trays, each inlaid by hand with mother of pearl, made in Chương Mỹ, Hanoi — named Nacre, the French word for the shell itself, for the way each fragment shifts between white and shadow depending on the light. The pattern is entirely white shell, teardrop fragments arranged in radiating rows against a dark base, fanning out like leaves from the centre of the tray. A thin border of shell traces the oval edge, framing the pattern inside it. The three trays nest together when not in use. The rattan rim is woven directly around each tray, with no separate handle — the weave itself gathers and loops to form a grip at either end.

Care Instructions

Mother of pearl lacquerware asks little, and gives back a great deal.

  • Wipe clean with a soft, dry cloth after use.
  • Avoid prolonged contact with moisture or liquids — particularly acidic substances like lemon juice or vinegar.
  • Do not place in a dishwasher or submerge in water.
  • Keep away from direct, sustained heat sources such as stovetops or open flames.
  • The surface will develop a subtle patina with use — this is natural and desirable, not a defect.
  • Not intended for direct food contact. Use with plates, bowls, or wrapped items rather than placing food directly on the tray surface.

The mother of pearl inlay is set into multiple layers of lacquer and sanded flush. It will not lift or peel under normal use.

Handcrafted Artistry

Handcrafted Artistry

Rattan is woven into form, then lacquer is applied in layers before shell fragments are placed by hand into the wet lacquer and sanded back flush. The oval form requires a more complex weaving approach than a round tray to hold its shape evenly.

02 / The Materials

Organic Materials

Materials
The tray base is woven from natural rattan. The inlay is genuine mother of pearl — white shell cut into teardrop fragments and set by hand into the radiating pattern.

The Nacre in Your Home

Three oval trays named after the material they carry. Elongated, soft, purposeful.

  • The Pearl Table (Dining Sideboard) — the large tray as an anchor for a sideboard: candles, a decanter, a small plant.
  • The Nacre Console (Entryway) — the medium tray in an entryway for keys, mail, and the things that need a designated place.
  • The Jewellery Tray (Dressing Table) — the small tray on a dressing table. The most beautiful place for the things you wear every day.
  • The Gathering Piece (For Guests) — set on a table when friends are over; the shell pattern catches the light and the conversation both.
