Handwoven in Ninh Binh along Vietnam's Red River Delta, this lidded seagrass basket is shaped by hand, strand by strand. We named her Mai, after the blossom that opens each Tet — Vietnam's flower of resilience and new beginnings. A quiet place to keep what matters, built to soften and deepen with time.

Please Note
Each basket is individually handwoven from natural water hyacinth by skilled artisans. Because of the handmade process and the unique characteristics of natural fibres, slight variations in colour, weave, shape, and facial details are part of what makes every piece one of a kind. The product you receive may differ from the photographs.

Story

The Mai is a large lidded seagrass basket, handwoven in Ninh Bình, one of Vietnam's most celebrated craft villages, where generations of artisans have passed the same weaving techniques from hand to hand.

It's named for the Mai blossom, Vietnam's yellow apricot flower that opens each Tết to mark the lunar new year — a symbol of beauty, resilience, and the warmth of home.

The seagrass begins in the sedge fields of Northern Vietnam, cut twice a year — in May and October — at the exact point of maturity, then sun-dried over several days with no chemical treatment. No two baskets are ever quite the same.

Care Instructions

A seagrass basket is meant to be lived with, not admired from a distance.

They're built to hold what a day accumulates — laundry, toys, throws — and to look better for it. With regular use, the natural tone deepens into a soft patina, the quiet mark of a piece well-loved.

  • Wipe clean with a dry or barely damp cloth. Do not saturate with water.
  • Keep away from prolonged moisture or direct rain.
  • Avoid sustained direct sunlight for extended periods — this may fade the natural colour over time.
  • If the basket loses its shape, lightly dampen the exterior and reshape by hand. Leave to dry in position.

Cared for this way, a Palme & House piece is built to stay in your home for years to come.

01 / The Craft

Handcrafted Artistry

Handcrafted Artistry

Every basket in The Mai collection begins with seagrass harvested from the tidal flats of Ninh Bình — cut by hand, sorted by thickness, and set out to sun-dry for several days. The weaving is done on the floor, without tools or frames, using a tight spiral technique that has been practised in this region for over a century.

The lid is woven separately and fitted by hand. It sits flush because the weaver has made it that way. Over 12 hours of continuous work goes into each piece.

02 / The Materials

Organic Materials

Organic Materials

Seagrass is a coastal grass native to the tidal flats and salt marshes of North-Central Vietnam. It is harvested seasonally, dried naturally in the sea wind, and used without bleaching or chemical treatment. The resulting fibre is strong, flexible, and slightly aromatic — a quality of the raw material that fades with time and use.

The Mai in Your Home

A lidded basket that earns its place in any room.

  • The Blossom Corner (Living Room) — beside the sofa for throw blankets and cushions that deserve a home.
  • The Nursery Keeper — lidded storage for toys, muslins, and the beautiful clutter of early childhood.
  • The Entryway Anchor — scarves, dog leads, and the things that need to be close to the door.
