A three-tone set of 2 seagrass baskets with long, hand-sewn seagrass handles, handwoven in Ninh Bình — named for the quiet contrast of natural, white, and black, three tones, one considered piece.

Please Note
Each basket is individually handwoven from natural seagrass by skilled artisans. Because of the handmade process and the unique characteristics of natural fibres, slight variations in colour, weave, and shape are part of what makes every piece one of a kind. Story

The Craie is a set of 2 handwoven seagrass baskets in natural, white, and black — a three-tone colourway that reads as painterly rather than graphic. Named for the quiet contrast of natural, white, and black: three tones, one considered piece.

Made in Ninh Bình, along Vietnam's Red River Delta, where seagrass weaving communities have worked the same coastal harvest routes for generations. The three tones are woven together in a pattern that varies slightly across each basket — no two are identical.

The handles are long and hand-sewn entirely from seagrass — braided, doubled over, and stitched into the basket body after weaving, a small, deliberate detail that lifts the piece. Sold as a set of two. Place them together as a pair, or use them in different rooms.

Care Instructions

A seagrass basket is meant to be lived with, not admired from a distance.

They're built to hold what a day accumulates — laundry, toys, throws — and to look better for it. With regular use, the natural tone deepens into a soft patina, the quiet mark of a piece well-loved.

  • Wipe clean with a dry or barely damp cloth. Do not saturate with water.
  • Keep away from prolonged moisture or direct rain.
  • Avoid sustained direct sunlight for extended periods — this may fade the natural colour over time.
  • If the basket loses its shape, lightly dampen the exterior and reshape by hand. Leave to dry in position.

Cared for this way, a Palme & House piece is built to stay in your home for years to come.

01 / The Craft

Handcrafted Artistry

Handcrafted Artistry

The Craie uses the same seagrass weaving technique as The Mai and The Lune, with the addition of a three-tone colour pattern woven directly into the basket rather than applied after. The natural, white, and black tones are alternated in the weave to create the characteristic pattern — each basket carries a slightly different arrangement.

Every basket begins with seagrass harvested from the tidal flats of Ninh Bình — cut by hand, sorted by thickness, and set out to sun-dry for several days. The weaving is done on the floor, without tools or frames, using a tight spiral technique practised in this region for generations.

The two sizes are woven to nest together, the smaller sitting inside the larger when not in use.

The handles are long-sewn seagrass — braided, doubled over, and stitched to the basket body by hand after weaving, finished to sit flush against the weave.

02 / The Materials

Organic Materials

Organic Materials

Seagrass is a coastal grass native to the tidal flats and salt marshes of North-Central Vietnam. It is harvested seasonally, dried naturally in the sea wind, and used without bleaching or chemical treatment. The resulting fibre is strong, flexible, and slightly aromatic — a quality of the raw material that fades with time and use.

Styled In Your Space

The Craie in Your Home

  • The Considered Corner (Home Office) — the large basket beside a desk for magazines, files, or the things that pile up on a working surface.
  • The Tonal Pair (Living Room) — both sizes nested or spread apart, as a quiet storage pair in a neutral, considered space.
  • The Blanket Keeper (Bedroom) — the smaller basket at the foot of the bed, holding an extra throw for the nights that turn cool.
