A set of three rectangular rattan trays with a warm ivory lattice mother-of-pearl inlay, handcrafted in Chương Mỹ, Hanoi — named Miel, the French word for honey, for the golden undertones that surface as light catches the shell and rattan together.

Please Note
Each tray is individually handcrafted with hand-placed mother of pearl inlay by skilled artisans. Because of the handmade process and the natural characteristics of shell and rattan, slight variations in colour, inlay pattern, and shading are part of what makes every piece one of a kind. The product you receive may differ from the photographs.

Story

Miel is a set of three rectangular rattan trays, each surface inlaid with a warm ivory mother-of-pearl pattern — honeycomb-like, formed from individually cut diamond-shaped fragments, every piece placed by hand. Named Miel, the French word for honey, for the golden undertones that surface as light catches the shell and rattan together, and for the pattern itself.

Made in Chương Mỹ, Hanoi. The pattern is technically demanding to inlay, requiring the artisan to maintain consistent spacing across the full surface of the tray so it reads as one continuous surface rather than individual fragments. The ivory shell shifts between cream, gold, and pale green depending on the angle of light.

Three graduated sizes: 31×21cm, 33×23cm, and 35×25cm. Beautiful enough to leave out.

Each tray's inlay is set in a repeating diamond pattern, the shell fragments cut and placed by hand so the lattice reads as one continuous surface rather than individual pieces. Cut-out rattan handles are woven directly into the rim at either end. Three graduated sizes: 31×21cm, 33×23cm, and 35×25cm, each 4cm deep — designed to sit together on a coffee table or spread across a console.

Care Instructions

Mother of pearl inlay asks little, and gives back a great deal.

  • Wipe clean with a soft, dry cloth after use.
  • Avoid prolonged contact with moisture or liquids — particularly acidic substances like lemon juice or vinegar.
  • Do not place in a dishwasher or submerge in water.
  • Keep away from direct, sustained heat sources such as stovetops or open flames.
  • The surface will develop a subtle patina with use — this is natural and desirable, not a defect.
  • Not intended for direct food contact. Use with plates, bowls, or wrapped items rather than placing food directly on the tray surface.

The mother of pearl inlay is set into multiple layers of lacquer and sanded flush. It will not lift or peel under normal use.

Handcrafted Artistry

The honeycomb-like pattern in Miel is formed from individually cut diamond-shaped fragments, placed by hand to maintain consistent spacing across the full tray surface while the lacquer is still wet.

Rattan is woven first, then lacquer is applied in layers before the shell is set and sanded back flush.

Organic Materials

Materials

The tray base is woven from natural rattan. The inlay is genuine mother of pearl, cut into diamond-shaped fragments and set by hand into the honeycomb-like pattern. The warm ivory tone comes from the natural colour variation of the shell itself — no dye is applied.

Miel in Your Home

Three rectangular trays named after honey. A warm ivory shimmer on any surface.

  • The Honey Surface (Coffee Table) — the large tray as a coffee table anchor: a candle, a small plant, a book. The objects that make a room feel complete.
  • The Golden Hour (Kitchen) — the medium tray beside the stove or on a kitchen island, holding bottled oils and jars — the daily rituals of cooking, kept in one place.
  • The Honeycomb Beside (Nightstand) — the small tray on a nightstand for a glass of water, glasses, and the things that end and begin each day.
  • The Gathering Piece (For Guests) — set out when friends are over; the honeycomb shimmer catches the light and the conversation both.
